Twilight was a phenomenal success. We know this. Fifty Shades of Gray was a Twilight fanfiction, originally, right - also phenomenal, added BDSM, removed vampires. Is the key to the next guaranteed success starting out writing 50SOG fanfic and adding vampires? Possibly leaving in BDSM? Did Anne Rice peak too soon?

It's been remarked that it's a breeding ground for bad writing *on the topic of characterization specifically* because if one is working with existing characters, one doesn't have to explain the how and why of their personality. Then, of course, immediate whiplash sets in when it turns out that the character as understood by the fanfic writer (read: often nutcase) has nothing to do with the character in their native media.
Trollfic writers, of course, do this on purpose.

Sexy Zombies was a possibility, but it flamed out. It doesn't appear to have legs with the Creepy Mom demo - vampires and BDSM appear to be pretty solid. Now, introducing something Justin Bieberish (somehow) and you're golden.

50SOG was originally written as a Twilight fan fic. When she decided to shop it around to publishers she re-wrote Edward into Christian Grey. Apparently 85% of the final book is a word-for-word match to her original Twilight fanfic.

The key is probably to insert sex first. Get people into enough of an inhibitions off/dream state kind of thing that they're more willing to accept weird shit suddenly happening - also makes for better whiplash... So that's why Jason murders horny teenagers. Those clever bastards.

I've run across the furry fandom enough in various venues (webcomic communities, etc.) to know that it has overlap (not a Venn O, obviously) with very nearly everything both banal and fucked up, but mainstreaming the appeal of weird shit is hard. I *am* applying the P. T. Barnum principle here in terms of never going broke underestimating bad taste, though. If it's horrible enough, it *will* sell.

Well, see, AVP *leaned* in that direction already - but human/Predator. To sell to Creepy Moms, it needs to have a touchstone character to identify with. This *does* even apply to Creepy Moms into yaoi, insofar as one of the "guys" is a chick surrogate to a degree at the same time as being a sympathy character. Alien/Predator is a bridge too far for most.

It's one of those "if you can imagine it, it exists" things. Considering it's been around in horrific amounts since the very early Trek fanzines, and in a looser sense dates back hundreds of years...
The real question is this: is pure original fic *enough* better than fanfic on average that we want to encourage fanfic writers writing that instead? Consider Eye of Argon...

It practically writes itself. Basically, just follow the same story as 50 Shades of Grey but set it up that Christian Grey is also a vampire. It would only require a few extra bits of dialogue inserted here and there, and the book is already such a poorly structured mess, nobody would be able to tell it was an afterthought.

Also, can we replace the Kate character with maybe like a sassy African-American lady that says things like "no you didn't"?

Sassy is one thing, but probably hurts the sympathetic character angle if in excess. Maybe Kate-equivalent can be semi-sassy, with a friend who is full-time sassy.
Also, I get the sense that one new idiotic plot twist is needed, minimum. Twilight had sparkles and "renesme" and werewolf imprinting, so that set the bar pretty high. Wait, I've got it. Fanged. Dicks.
